Rabbits are sociable by nature hence they need the companionship of their kind. For rabbits, the slogan “the more the merrier” applies because they are naturally designed to live in large communities. Your rabbits will be much happier living in pairs or similar groups and will become very lonely you keep it on their own.

To achieve seamless camaraderie, your rabbits should be kept together from birth.

• Rabbits tend to develop serious long-term health problems such as dental disease. The risk of encountering this health problem increases with the more rabbits you have.

Relatively few drugs are approved for use in rabbits. Caution should be taken when using antibiotics that repress the commonly occurring, harmless digestive system bacteria and other minor infections in rabbits.

Rabbit Hutches

A rabbit’s hutch should be raised off the floor to allow air to disseminate and prevent surface water from getting absorbed into the floor. It should have a waterproof roof but should be sited in a shady position because hutches become hot during summer months.

Your rabbit’s hutch must be secure against any predators and also guard against your rabbits getting out. For this reason, bolt fastenings are better than turn buttons etc as they cannot be opened accidentally.

When preparing a hutch, using a wire floor for your hutch surface is not advisable because it gives rabbits sore feet and makes cleaning very strenuous.

In case you procured a second-hand hutch, scrub it out thoroughly with any recommended animal cage cleaner. Ensure this is done days before you house your new rabbits, as the timber must dry properly before you prepare the hutch for its new occupants.

No hutch is too large for your rabbits. The minimum hutch size for small or large rabbits is 183cm (6ft) x 60cm (2ft) floor space by 60cm (2ft) tall. If your rabbits are of differing sizes, ensure you provide a large comfortable hutch. Your rabbits need to be able to stretch out lengthways, hop around, and stand up on their hind legs, otherwise, they may experience skeletal aches and pains from being too cramped.

Ensure there are at least two rooms in your hutch. One hutch area should be spacious enough for your rabbits to hop around, eat, and toilet. The other area should be used as a sleeping area.
